1,200 P6 pupils learn about STEM in the Workplace
OVER 1,200 P6 pupils from every primary school in Moray have attended the STEM in the Workplace event at RAF Lossiemouth this week.
The annual event is a combined initiative between Moray Council and RAF Lossiemouth, providing pupils with an insight into how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are used in modern careers.
The event brought together a variety of RAF trades, defence contractors, council engineers and local industry partners to showcase the diversity of STEM in careers by practically demonstrating how organisations use these subjects in the workplace. The event seeks to inspire and enthuse young students to continue studying in STEM based areas and show that these skills are required in some unexpected roles.
Moray Council’s Education Support Officer (Skills), Maxine Garson, said STEM in the Workplace is a creative way of inspiring pupils to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or maths.
“Importantly, it’s a hands-on way for our young people to experience all the different options a STEM career could offer them. There are hundreds of different jobs within the STEM industries and it’s exciting to think of all the possibilities that lie ahead for these pupils.
“I’m thrilled that every primary six pupil in Moray has participated. They are the scientists and engineers of the future – and I hope it encourages them to think about pursuing a STEM career and realising the career opportunities locally.”
Chair of Moray Council’s Children & Young People’s Services Committee, Cllr Sonya Warren, said:
“STEM in the Workplace is a highlight on the school calendar and I’m thrilled to see 1,200 pupils making the most of the opportunity to learn about all the different STEM careers available to them.
“Thank you to our partners, RAF Lossiemouth, for hosting another successful event and, as a major employer in the area, engaging in such a positive way with our learners. Thanks to all attendees for showcasing the excellent array of careers available on our doorstep.
“We want to keep our young people in Moray; we need their skills to help make sure Moray remains a fantastic place to live, work and play; and today has proved these opportunities exist right here.”
Sarah Riley-Evans, Community Development Officer at RAF Lossiemouth, works closely with Moray Council to provide opportunities for schoolchildren to visit the RAF station and better understand how STEM subjects are a part of the variety of jobs in the Royal Air Force.
“STEM in the Workplace is well received year after year, as it provides Moray pupils a glimpse of the wide variety of roles in the Royal Air Force which need STEM skills. RAF Lossiemouth is delighted that this year’s event has been run formally in partnership with Moray Council and further cements our excellent relations.
