Active Schools & Moray Community Sport Team Celebrates at Annual ‘Thank You Event’
The annual 'Active Schools & Community Sport Team – Thank You Event' was held on Friday 7 June, during National Volunteers Week 2024.
The special evening was an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the work done by volunteers and partners to promote sport and physical activity in the area. The event took place at Elgin Bowling Club and brought together a lively community committed to improving sports for children, young people, and residents.
The evening’s format, included the first-ever small-scale recognition awards. These awards were organised by the Active Schools Coordinators and Community Sport Hub Officer to honour those who have gone above and beyond in their volunteer roles.
With one hundred people attending, Elgin Bowling Club was buzzing with energy. Guests enjoyed a game of lawn bowls while Garry Reid, the Lead Manager for sportscotland, announced and presented the awards.
The award winners were:
- Cole Ryan (Basketball, Forres): Young Leader of the Year
- Allana Galloway (Mixed Sports, Tomintoul): School Sport Volunteer of the Year
- Willie Merchant (Hockey across Moray): Club Coach of the Year
- Friendly Access, Swimable (Lossiemouth & Forres): Sport/Community Project of the Year
Garry Reid, the Lead Manager, sportscotland, said: “These individuals along with all the nominees have shown outstanding dedication and they have made significant contributions to enhancing the opportunities for people to take part in sport in Moray. Their commitment is truly commendable and deserves recognition.”
Roy McPherson, Moray Council’s Principal Active Schools and Community Sport Officer, added: “We wouldn’t be able to offer the range of physical activity we do without the support of all our volunteers, so it’s only right that we recognise the efforts they put into our communities across Moray.”
