Almost half of Moray pupils take part in extra-curricular sport
Nearly half of Moray’s school pupils are now taking part in extra-curricular sporting activities, exceeding the national average of 40%, according to a new report.
Figures show that 47% of primary and secondary students across the region joined Active Schools Moray sessions during the 2024/25 academic year.
The programme’s annual report also notes a strong rise in participation, with 5,680 young people involved in 24/25 - up from 4,740 the previous year.
Improving accessibility has been a key focus area for Active Schools Moray, and the latest figures reflect progress in this priority. The number of pupils with additional support needs (ASN) taking part increased from 1,559 to 1,667, while assessed disabled participants rose from 144 to 165.
Volunteer numbers have also grown sharply, rising from 456 to 574 - an increase of more than 100 in just 12-months.
Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many young people getting active and involved in sport and we’re equally grateful to the volunteers who make these opportunities possible. Their time and commitment are vital in helping school pupils across Moray keep active and build confidence.”
Principal Active Schools & Community Sport Officer Roy McPherson added: “The progress has been really positive, highlighting the hard work and dedication of the entire team. It’s thanks to them that we’re able to offer a diverse range of activities – everything from dancing, to cricket and football.
“Looking ahead, we’ll continue to prioritise accessibility to ensure that everyone who wants to take part in physical activity has the opportunity to do so. Being active is important, not just for physical health, but also for mental wellbeing and it’s great to see more young people benefitting from that.”
