Alves Primary to celebrate 150 years with special community event

Alves Primary School will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a special community event on Friday 22 August from 5pm to 7pm.

The event, organised by the school’s Parent Council with support from local businesses and the 39th Regiment from Kinloss, will take place on the school grounds. There will be an outdoor ceilidh, food stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle, and lots of fun activities for families to enjoy.

Food will be available from The Snug and the Miss Whippy van, along with homemade cakes kindly made by one of the school’s parents. Visitors can also enjoy raffles, community stalls, and a historical display in the school hall building, showcasing memories from the school’s 150-year history.

Alves Primary’s Head Teacher, James McLeman said: “This is a very proud and emotional moment for our school. Reaching 150 years is no small achievement, and it reflects the strength of our community and the generations of pupils, teachers, and families who have contributed to Alves Primary’s story. We’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone together—with music, laughter, and plenty of fun for all ages. A heartfelt thank you goes to our Parent Council, local businesses, the 39th Regiment, and all the volunteers whose energy and enthusiasm are making this event possible. We can’t wait to welcome everyone for what promises to be a very special evening.”

Moray Council’s Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “Alves Primary has been at the heart of its community for a century and a half—an incredible legacy of learning, growth, and togetherness. This celebration is a chance to bring people together and recognise everything the school has achieved.”

Moray Council’s Head of Education, Vivienne Cross, added: “The 150th anniversary is a special milestone. The school has continuously adapted and thrived, all while maintaining its close-knit, nurturing ethos. It’s great to see the community involved in marking this event, and we’re pleased to support the school as it celebrates its history and future.”
