Approval recommended for school catchment changes

A series of minor amendments to the catchment areas of a number of schools in and around Elgin are being recommended for approval by education officers.

It follows a period of public consultation on the rezoning proposals affecting Bishopmill, Seafield, West End, Linkwood and Lhanbryde primary schools as well as Elgin Academy, Elgin High and Milne’s High.

Moray Council’s children and young people’s services committee approved the consultation exercise after being told the proposals would have the effect of ‘tidying up’ the school catchment areas.

A survey carried out as part of the consultation generated 24 responses, a significant majority of which were in agreement with the rezoning proposals.

Education Scotland also said the proposals were of ‘clear educational benefit’ and would help the council to meet its aim of ensuring that the whole of a primary school catchment area would be contained within the catchment area of a single secondary school.

The proposals will go before the full meeting of Moray Council on March 29 for final approval, with a view to their implementation at the start of the next academic year in August.
