Armed Forces Day 2026 1

Armed Forces Day flag raised at Moray Council HQ in Elgin

The Armed Forces Day flag has been raised at Moray Council’s headquarters in Elgin ahead of National Armed Forces Day 2026 (Saturday 27 June) to recognise and celebrate the region’s military and defence community.

It was hoisted above the building by WO James Stoddart of RAF Lossiemouth, supported by WO2 Johnpaul Johnstone of 39 Engineer Regiment; Moray Council Armed Forces Champion Cllr Peter Bloomfield; Council Leader Cllr Kathleen Robertson; Civic Leader Cllr John Cowe; Lord-Lieutenant of Moray, Air Commodore Alistair Monkman CBE; Deputy Lieutenant for Banffshire, Rev Dr Kay Gauld and Lord Lieutenant's Cadet, Cadet Flight Sergeant Rylan Lawrence-MacAskill.

Cllr Peter Bloomfield, Armed Forces Champion, said: “Moray’s connection with the Armed Forces runs deep both historically and in everyday life. Raising the flag today represents our collective respect and gratitude for those who serve and have served, along with the families that support them.”

Lord-Lieutenant of Moray, Air Commodore Alistair Monkman CBE, added: “Armed Forces Day is a powerful reminder of the commitment shown by all Service personnel, be they regular or reserve, veterans, contractors and civil servants. It highlights the enduring bond between the military and the communities they serve and showcases our gratitude for their endeavours. In Moray that relationship is particularly strong, and it is right and necessary that we come together to recognise and celebrate those linkages in this way.”

Deputy Lieutenant for Banffshire, Rev Dr Kay Gauld, commented: “The Armed Forces community in Moray is woven into the fabric of local life and today’s ceremony is a meaningful expression of shared respect and gratitude. As an ATC Padre, it is a privilege to stand with members of our Armed Forces at such a significant event.”

Armed Forces Day is marked annually on the last Saturday in June to commemorate and show support for those who serve.
