VJ Day-2

Communities invited to mark 80 years since VJ Day

Communities across Moray and Banffshire are being encouraged to come together in remembrance to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day (VJ Day) on Friday 15 August.

VJ Day marks the end of hostilities between the Allied Forces and Japan, effectively bringing the Second World War to a close.

A national two minute silence will be held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day at midday on 15 August

80-years on, the Lord Lieutenant of Moray and the Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire are inviting residents to take part in local events and community-led tributes to honour those who served, and those who never returned.

Communities planning events are being encouraged to share their plans via lieutenancy@moray.gov.uk, so that a full picture of commemorations across the counties can be shared.

Official events, led by the Lord Lieutenants, will also be taking place with details being announced in the coming weeks.

Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, Mr Andrew Simpson, said: “This is a moment for us to look back with gratitude and to involve our communities – especially our younger generations – in remembering the significance of VJ Day. We want this anniversary to be marked with respect and unity, and we hope to see a range of events taking place across the region.”

Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Air Commodore Alistair Monkman CBE, added: “VJ Day brought to an end one of the darkest chapters in global history. It is right that we pause to remember not only the relief and celebration that came with that day, but the heavy cost of conflict endured across the world. I encourage people across Moray to reflect, and recognize the sacrifices made on our behalf, and to take part in community events that honour those who gave so much.”
