Community invited to attend planting session at new orchard in Buckie

*UPDATED 17 MARCH 2020 - tree planting sessions have been cancelled*

A COMMUNITY planting session will take place next week to kick-start the creation of a new orchard in Buckie.

Schools and nurseries in the town will take part in a planting session on Friday 20 March, with a community event on Saturday 21 March between 10.30am and noon. Members of the community are welcome to attend Saturday’s event to plant a tree.

Money for the community orchard has come from the developer obligations secured for the building of the Tesco store in Buckie. The orchard will be situated at the rose garden site at Queen Street, as agreed by local councillors.

It comes after a public consultation on the draft design, and a drop-in session, which drew supportive comments from the community.

Chair of Moray Council’s Planning & Regulatory Services Committee, Cllr David Bremner, said the community participation to date has been encouraging.

“There has been good engagement with local schools, nurseries and community groups, who will be able to use the orchard for outdoor learning sessions. They’ll also benefit from harvesting, cooking and eating the fruit grown in the orchard."
