Completion of Linkwood Primary delayed due to nationwide closure of construction sites
Closure of construction sites across Scotland means the new Linkwood Primary School in Elgin will not open in August as planned.
Pupils due to attend the new Linkwood Primary from August will be accommodated in the Linkwood Annexe at East End Primary, from the start of the new school year until further notice.
It follows confirmation that the new primary school will not be ready on its anticipated completion date, due to non-essential construction sites being instructed to close by the Scottish Government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Work halted at the Linkwood site in March, with the site made safe in accordance with industry requirements.
Families with children at Linkwood and East End primary schools have been informed, and Moray Council has also notified the families that submitted placing requests for Linkwood. No nursery provision will be available at Linkwood from August 2020, and families who had selected Linkwood nursery for their child’s early learning and childcare setting have been asked to make an alternative first choice. Families of children with additional support needs will be contacted individually to discuss the best options for their children.
Chair of Moray Council’s Children & Young People’s Services Committee, Cllr Sonya Warren, said: “Although I know the Linkwood school community will be disappointed to see the completion of the new school delayed, once we are given instruction that construction sites can re-open, we’ll work with our contractors to recommence building as quickly and safely as possible.”
Work has also stopped on site at the new Lossiemouth High School. Families will be informed directly of any change in timescales as a result of the temporary closure.
