Construction re-starts on Moray schools

Construction work on two new Moray schools re-commenced today.

Work on Linkwood Primary school in Elgin and Lossie High stalled almost three months ago since the COVID-19 lockdown was introduced.

The re-start follows the announcement by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon that sites can now proceed to Phase 2 of the plan developed by Construction Scotland on behalf of the industry.

Phase 2 allows a ‘soft start’ on sites where physical distancing can be maintained and follows earlier Covid-19 site planning and preparation works.

Fraser Innes, operations director at Hub North Scotland who are managing the construction of the schools, said the decision to start work again came after discussions between clients and contractors.

He said: “Our contractors are following the guidelines to ensure the sites have the appropriate hygiene and safe distancing measures to resume work safely.”

Work on the £42 million replacement Lossiemouth High School had been progressing ahead of schedule prior to lockdown.

The new school is being constructed alongside the existing building, which will be demolished once the new facility opens. It will have capacity for up to 800-pupils and will incorporate a community centre and library, swimming pool, games hall and 3G sports pitch.

The £12.8million Linkwood project will provide space for 462 pupils, including specialist ASN (additional support needs) provision for 12 young people and 40 nursery places.
