Continued progress for literacy and numeracy attainment in Moray’s secondary schools
The 2022/23 academic year session saw the second year of return to formal Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) exams and the first full school year since the covid-19 pandemic.
The year saw the positive trend in senior phase performance continue when benchmarked against the Virtual Comparator (VC). This is based on selecting young people across Scotland that match key characteristics of the young people in the school or local authority. The performance of the school can then be assessed in relation to that VC group.
In S4, literacy and numeracy has remained positive at 86%, where achievement is in-line with the VC. It is also noted for the first time in five years, Moray’s performance outperforms the VC at Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level five.
In S5, both SCQF level four and five have seen Moray outperform the VC by 2% in literacy and numeracy. Over the last five years, SCQF level four has seen a 4% rise in attainment and level five has seen a 10% rise, closing the national gap considerably.
In S6, literacy and numeracy for SCQF level five sits at 90%, above the virtual comparator which sits at 86%. This is the highest performance at this level over the last five years.
Full analysis into the senior phase attainment is available in the committee papers.
Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Communities and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “I’m so pleased we’ve been able to see a continued increase in attainment in our S4 to S6 pupils.
“The hard work and dedication from all education staff across Moray, alongside the efforts from pupils to continue to improve and excel does not go unnoticed.
“While we take the time to celebrate these excellent results, we remain dedicated to continue the work with the schools to increase attainment even further.”
