Details confirmed of D-Day landings commemorative event in Findhorn

Following the announcement earlier this year that there will be a commemorative event of the D-Day landings in Findhorn on 6 June, further details of the event have been confirmed.

The Commemoration and Remembrance Service are open for anyone to attend with an interdenominational Service taking place on and near the South Pier at Findhorn at 11.30am.

There will be participation from the 39 Regiment Royal Engineers, Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth. The Royal British Legion Scotland Forres Branch and Veterans Associations will also be present. The service will include a short brief on the story of the evacuation and training in the Moray Firth area prior to D-Day.

Two wreaths will be handed to the crew of a Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation boat who will lay one in the Bay in memory of those killed on training and those killed on D-Day. The other wreath will be laid above the War Grave of Corporal Francis Underhay, who died when his Valentine Duplex drive tank sank about a mile off Culbin.

Weather and operations permitting, there will be a fly past by aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth.

The Findhorn Heritage Centre, which contains some artefacts from the time, will be open after the service.

Lord – Lieutenant of Moray, Major General Seymour Monro, said; “I am confident this will be a fitting way to commemorate those brave men and women who trained for and took part in the most important operation in the Second World War.”
