Drainage investigation works to begin at Cooper Park
Moray Council has awarded a contract to Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd to carry out essential drainage investigation works within Cooper Park pond.
The work is scheduled to begin from Monday 7 July 2025 and is expected to last around two weeks.
Specialist cameras will be used to inspect the pond’s drainage pipes and chambers, which help manage the flow of water in and out of the pond. These pipes will be cleaned to remove any blockages and make sure water can flow freely. The drainage system runs under the A941 and connects to the River Lossie to the west.
To better understand the structure of the pond, two small exploratory holes, known as trial pits, will be dug within the pond area. These will help identify the lining that sits beneath the water and how deep it is. One pit will be next to a damaged section of the pond wall, which will carefully be taken apart for inspection then repaired and replaced once the investigation work is complete.
The investigation work forms part of the wider programme of works in and around Elgin town centre delivered through the UK Government Levelling Up Fund (LUF) investment. The project is aimed at improving infrastructure within the park to support future enhancements. More details on the wider redevelopment can be found in the previous announcement.
Resurfacing work of the footpath leading to the pavilion is expected to start in August 2025 and further updates will be provided as the programme progresses.
Cllr Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, said: "This is another welcome step forward in the delivery of improvements at Cooper Park as part of our Levelling Up Fund investment. These initial investigations are vital to inform the wider redevelopment plans and ensure we build on solid foundations, both literally and figuratively. The work is also in addition to the algae issues being dealt with, as reported earlier in the week.
