Elgin City South by-election candidates under starters orders

Candidate nomination packs are now available for prospective candidates for the Elgin City South (Ward 7) by-election, due to be held on 7 November.

The formal election period starts from Thursday 26 September, with candidate nominations being lodged from the same date. Candidates have until 4pm on Monday 7 October to submit their papers, by appointment, with the Returning Officer.

A full election timetable, with deadlines for registering to vote or applying for a postal or proxy vote for this poll is available on Moray Council’s website.

Any prospective candidates who wish to receive a copy of the candidate nomination pack can contact the elections office by emailing elections@moray.gov.uk or calling the elections helpline on 01343 563334.

Nomination packs and further information is also available for candidates to download at www.moray.gov.uk/elections.

The election will be conducted by the Single Transferable Vote (STV) proportional representation system, in which voters are asked to mark candidates by preference using numbers. Voters will be able vote for as many or as few candidates as they wish. There are approximately 10,000 voters in the ward with around 20% opting to vote by post.

Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Woodhill House, Westburn Road, Aberdeen, AB16 5GE by 12 midnight on Tuesday 22 October 2024. Applications can be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Applications for, or amendments of, postal votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer, at the above address by 5pm on Wednesday 23 October 2024. Details and postal vote application forms are available at www.votemoray.org.

Voters should be aware that having a postal vote for the recent General Election doesn’t mean they’ll automatically have one for the by-election, unless they selected all future elections.
