Forres Conservation and Heritage Scheme exhibition to share local stories at Culture Day
Forres residents and visitors are invited to celebrate the town's rich culture and heritage at this year's Culture Day, as part of the wider Findhorn Bay Arts Festival, on Saturday 26 September from 11am to 4pm.
The event, at Forres Tolbooth, will highlight the stories and the people that have helped shape the community over generations through exhibitions, performances and activities.
The Forres Conservation & Heritage Scheme is a £3.3 million, five-year programme putting Forres’ heritage at the heart of the town’s regeneration. The scheme is supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland, alongside other public investment.
The High Street Histories project brings together Forres Heritage Trust’s (FHT) photography collections to explore, document, preserve and share the history of Forres High Street, at the heart of the Forres Conservation Area. The photographs help connect the buildings and streets of Forres with the stories of the people who lived and worked on the High Street.
‘Stories from the Shadows’ is an immersive storytelling activity inspired by the fascinating stories of the people who have lived and worked in Forres. It will bring these personal stories to life and help visitors discover the people behind the town’s history. Longer-term, the exhibition will be hosted online with further in-person exhibitions to be held in the Forres area in future. The project will also make up a 10-part podcast series.
There will also be an opportunity to give feedback on the revised interpretation plans for the wider heritage project on the day.
Moray Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, commented on the event at Forres Culture Day: “We encourage as many people as possible to visit on Saturday 26 September to experience the rich heritage of Forres and the community. Celebrating heritage is an important part of keeping the history of any town alive, and the Forres Conservation and Heritage Scheme aims to remember the past, while also looking forward to a vibrant and sustainable town centre of the future”.
Culture Day Forres 2026 will take place on Saturday 26th September from 11am to 4pm in Forres town centre, as part of the Findhorn Bay Festival 2026 (24 September - 4 October 2026).
