Free period product scheme expands to 147 Moray locations

Free period products are now available at 147 locations across Moray after a major expansion of the council’s PeriodPlus service, further meeting its duties under the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2021.

The scheme, formerly known as the Period Dignity Service, is funded by £63,000 of Scottish Government funding for 2025/26. The new name and logo were created by local young people to reflect a wider focus on tackling stigma and supporting wellbeing, alongside providing free products.

The service covers both schools and community venues. During 2025, 49 new community locations began offering products, including sites in Tomintoul, Glenlivet, Cabrach and Cullen. More than 40 additional venues have also been added to the national PickUpMyPeriod platform, making it easier for people to find their nearest outlet.

In schools, all secondary Head Teachers have been offered support to improve access and education about period products. “PeriodPlus ambassador” groups are being piloted at Forres Academy and Speyside High School, giving pupils a leading role in shaping provision and creating peer-led resources such as first-period packs for primary pupils.

The service has attended more than 40 community events this year to raise awareness and normalise conversations about periods. Work with Community Sports Hubs and assistance from their Health Improvement Fund means some coaches now carry products alongside their first aid kits, supported by training on stigma-free communication – an approach now being replicated by other local authorities.

Sustainability is also a growing focus, with reusable options such as period cups, reusable pads and period pants promoted alongside disposable products, helping reduce both costs and environmental impact.

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “The expansion of PeriodPlus across Moray is a significant step forward in ensuring dignity and equality for everyone who needs access to period products. It’s particularly encouraging to see young people helping to shape the service and lead conversations in their schools and communities.”
