Improvement in Curriculum for Excellence levels in Moray schools
Moray Council’s Education, Communities and Leisure committee has today (Tuesday 20 February) been updated on the 2023 Curriculum for Excellence levels (ACEL) achieved by school pupils Moray.
While overall performance is slightly below national averages, there’s a noticeable improvement across the board from 2022 and the gap between Moray and national performance is seen to be narrowing.
Listening and talking, reading, writing and literacy in S3 and S4 show a notable increase on 2022 averages. Literacy showed a significant increase with a 14% rise within S3 students and a 17% increase in S4.
Improvement is also seen within primary schools, where P1 and P4 pupils increased achievement across all areas from the previous year. Including a 2% increase for literacy and 3% in numeracy in P1 and a 5% increase in literacy and 4% in numeracy for P4.
Actions have been identified to improve progress in areas where performance remains below the national average and work is ongoing to ensure all schools are fully supported with access to the resources needed to continue to raise curriculum for excellence levels.
Full analysis into the curriculum for excellence levels is available in the committee papers.
Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Communities and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “It’s good to see an increasing trend across the board in this year’s Curriculum for Excellence levels. The dedication from all staff across Moray, alongside the efforts from pupils to continue to improve is evident and the reward is a staggering improvement that sees us well on our way to meeting our stretch aims.
“Of course, there’s always room for improvement and Moray Council will continue to monitor and make further improvements to continue raising education levels and fully close the gap on national averages.”
