Information session announced for prospective candidates interested in becoming a councillor

MORAY residents interested in becoming a councillor are being encouraged to attend an information session on 1 March.

Prospective candidates will get an insight into local government, the role councillors play in the democratic process, and more information on what’s involved in standing for election.

There are eligibility criteria for those looking to stand as candidates at the local government elections, which take place on 5 May. Nominations open on 15 March, and must be submitted by 4pm on 30 March.

Moray’s Returning Officer, Denise Whitworth, said the virtual event is an excellent opportunity for those considering representing their communities in the council chamber to speak with senior managers from Moray Council before lodging their nomination papers.

“Being a councillor is a challenging but rewarding role; there are opportunities to positively influence local policy, decision-making and services. Councillors make hugely important decisions which affect the very communities they live in and represent, working with those communities and partners to maximise the impact of positive change.

“To give prospective candidates an idea of what being a councillor is really like, we’ll explain about the role of a councillor, the importance of community leadership, an overview of our strategic priorities – what we’re working on together to achieve the best for Moray’s residents – and how councillors direct this.

“We’ll also cover more practical ground, such as the training and support available, pay, pension, offices and equipment.

“Our experienced elections staff will be available to talk through the nomination and elections process, and council staff can answer questions on any aspect of being a councillor.

“The session runs from 6 – 8pm, and we’re asking those interested in joining the stream to sign up via Eventbrite. All those who have registered by the end of the day on 28 February will receive a link by lunchtime on 1 March, and we hope to welcome a number of prospective councillors to the virtual streaming later that evening.”
