Keith Grammar pupils set for world stage at underwater robotics championship

Pupils from Keith Grammar are preparing to make a splash on the world stage as they travel to Canada to represent Scotland at the MATE ROV World Championship.

The school’s team, ImpROVise, will head to St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Monday 22 June 2026, after securing their place at the international competition by winning the MATE ROV Scotland Regional Competition at Robert Gordon University earlier this year.

Taking place from 25 to 27 June, the championship will bring together some of the world’s most talented young engineers and innovators.

The competition challenges teams to design, build and pilot underwater robots, known as Remotely Operated Vehicles, or ROVs, to complete a series of tasks inspired by real-world marine and subsea industry challenges.

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “Congratulations to the pupils and staff at Keith Grammar School on this fantastic achievement. Reaching a world championship is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects the hard work, commitment and talent of everyone involved.

“Representing Scotland on the international stage is something the whole Moray community can be proud of. I wish Team ImpROVise every success in Canada and look forward to hearing all about their experience when they return.”

Keith Grammar Head Teacher, Sean Duffy added: “We’re incredibly proud of Team ImpROVise and everything they have achieved. The pupils have shown outstanding dedication, teamwork and creativity throughout the competition, and winning the Scottish title was a well-deserved reward for their hard work.

“This is an unforgettable opportunity for our young people to compete at world championship level and showcase the talent we have here at Keith Grammar School. We wish them a safe journey and the very best of luck in Canada.”

The MATE ROV programme supports young people to develop valuable skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while also encouraging teamwork, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

Team ImpROVise will compete against schools and youth organisations from around the world as they put their underwater robotics skills to the test and proudly represent Scotland on the international stage.
