Library move for heritage centre

Moray Council’s local heritage centre could be on the move.

Councillors are being asked to approve the relocation of the service from its existing premises at East End Primary School in Elgin to Elgin library.

The council’s children and young people’s services committee will be told next week that the space is required by the school for extra classrooms and that it would enable the school to accommodate an additional 130 pupils.

The move to the library would see frontline heritage services accommodated in the learning centre on the first floor.

A report to committee states: “No other location has been identified that would provide adequate space to accommodate this service and not involve significant cost.”

It says that service users would also enjoy greater access to computers, parking, café facilities, tourist information and the full range of services provided by the central library and there would also be additional staff expertise and support available when necessary.

The report also states that the relocation would mean heritage service being available during normal library opening hours – 10am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday.

Opening hours at the current location are 10am to 5pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 10am to 8pm on Tuesday and 10am to 12 noon on Saturday.
