Linkwood Road entrance to Elgin Cemetery to close to vehicles on safety grounds

THE Linkwood Road entrance to Elgin Cemetery will close to vehicles with effect from Wednesday 19 February.

Signs will be installed on the gate pillars advising motorists that gates will be permanently locked, and a barrier installed to prevent vehicles reversing out of the cemetery onto Linkwood Road. Vehicles will be able to access the cemetery through the Oakfield Road entrance.

It comes after complaints from motorists and a follow-up inspection by Moray Council’s health and safety and transportation specialists, who highlighted a problem with visibility for cars entering and exiting the cemetery onto Linkwood Road.

Elgin Councillor, and Leader of Moray Council, Graham Leadbitter, said the safety of drivers and pedestrians is a priority.

“I’m grateful to our staff for highlighting this concern, and pleased to see this proactive action being taken to avoid any accidents.

“It’s important that access is available to the cemetery for funerals or visiting the memorials of their loved ones, and vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained through other existing entrances - while keeping vehicle access as safe as possible.”
