Makeover for Moray libraries begins
Moray Council is set to begin a £130,000 programme of refurbishment across several libraries in the coming months, improving library spaces for communities while keeping disruption to a minimum.
The first phase of work will take place at Forres Library, which will be repainted.
To allow this, the library will close from Saturday 14 February until Saturday 21 February.
A popup library service will run in the Green Room (upstairs in Forres Community Centre) from Monday 16 to Thursday 19 February, 10am–5pm.
During these four days, customers will be able to:
- Collect reserved books
- Use public computers
- Access printing facilities
The library will reopen on Monday 23 February at 10am.
The next phase will focus on Elgin Library, where the entire ground floor will be recarpeted, shelving will be rearranged and the Children’s Library area will receive new shelving and furniture in line with the refurbishment design proposal.
Elgin Library will need to close from 9 to 30 March to allow the work to be carried out safely and will have exciting new artwork in place when it re-opens.
A popup library provision will operate in the Gallery, with further details to be confirmed and shared ahead of the closure.
Both Buckie Library and Keith Library are also scheduled for redecoration in the coming months and all other branches will be reviewed over the 2026/27 year with a further programme of works to be considered if necessary. More information on dates and temporary service arrangements will be provided once plans are finalised.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee said: “Investing in our libraries means investing in our communities. These improvements will create brighter, more welcoming spaces for people of all ages to enjoy. The improvement works are in-line with the feedback we’ve received through our library user groups. We’re grateful for the public’s patience while the work is carried out and look forward to reopening refreshed libraries that continue to support learning, creativity and connection across Moray.”
