Moray Council approves increase to community council administration grants

Moray Council has agreed to increase the annual administration grant for Community Councils for the first time since 2010, helping local groups meet rising costs and continue their vital role in representing communities.

From April 2026, the basic grant will rise by 7.75%, bringing the fixed amount to £537.98 plus 7.83p per head of population. The grant will then be reviewed annually in line with inflation to ensure sustainability.

The decision follows feedback from community councils across Moray, many of which have faced financial challenges due to inflation, room hire costs and growing responsibilities. The Council will also explore additional support, including trusted access to school buildings for meetings and the provision of laptops to help community councils operate effectively.

Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “Community Councils are the voice of our local communities and play a crucial role in shaping decisions that affect people’s lives. This increase recognises the financial pressures they face and ensures they can continue to operate effectively and inclusively. By supporting them, we are strengthening local democracy and empowering communities across Moray.”

The uplift will benefit all community council areas, with the total grant allocation rising to £18,681.25 for 2026/27.
