Moray Council approves new cemetery for Elgin

The development of a new cemetery in Elgin has been agreed today (Tuesday 13 August) by Moray Council’s Planning and Regulatory Services Committee.

Elected Members agreed the proposal to develop the cemetery on a 5.6 hectare area of land to the east of Linkwood Road and north of Hallowood Road.

The development is subject to a number of conditions including: a requirement of the works beginning within the next three years; the installation of a new cycle path; and construction of a new access track.

The site was identified through the Local Development Plan as a suitable space for essential public service and notable opportunity for biodiversity enhancement. While an initial 35 trees would need to be removed, over 1,300 trees, significant areas of shrubs and wildflower will be planted.

Chair of Moray Council’s Planning and Regulatory Services Committee, Cllr David Gordon, said: “With the existing Elgin cemetery expected to reach capacity within the next few years, this development is essential to ensure this public service can continue to be provided.

“Thank you to everyone who shared their views through the consultation, feedback from the local community allows us to ensure our plans are shaped properly and carried out with the utmost sensitivity and care.”

More information on the proposal and drawings of the development can be found in the committee papers.
