Moray Council celebrates Scottish Apprenticeship Week

Moray Council is celebrating its apprentices and homegrown talent to mark Scottish Apprenticeship Week (3-7 March 2025).

Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships, highlighting the benefits they bring to businesses, people and the economy.

Moray Council, provides apprenticeships in a range of roles; including as plumbers, painters and electricians.

The local authority has also provided training opportunities in administration, ICT and Early Years – with many Modern Apprentices successfully completing their training and going on to secure full employment.

Carissa Anderson from Buckie is in the second year of her apprenticeship as a joiner.

She said: “This is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a young child – I’ve always wanted to be a joiner, and my apprenticeship is helping me live out that ambition.

“It’s actually surpassed my expectations. Don’t get me wrong – it’s very hard work, but it’s rewarding and very enjoyable. It’s the people who make it what it is alongside the job, it’s a great environment and I really enjoy what I do.

“To anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it. You won’t regret your decision.”

Moray Council has a long-standing record of creating opportunities for and developing young talent.

Callum Ord, from Elgin, joined Moray Council as a Building Standards Officer in 2016, having had no previous experience in the role.

He said: “I’d previously been working as an Architectural Technician, and when the job came up I decided to go for it.

“I was given all of the skills and training I needed to succeed in the role, and it must have gone well as here I am, almost a decade later, still in the role!

“Just because you take a different career path to the one you expected doesn’t mean it’s the wrong one, and that’s certainly the case for me. I love what I do. Moray Council is great at developing homegrown talent, and I’m proud to be among them.”

Moray Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and achievements of our apprentices.

“At Moray Council, we are proud to offer a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities that not only help develop skills but also create lasting careers.”
