Moray Council honours seafarers on Merchant Navy Day 2026
Moray Council has once again raised the distinctive Red Ensign at its headquarters in Elgin to mark Merchant Navy Day and recognise the invaluable contribution of merchant seafarers, past and present.
The annual flag-raising ceremony brought together councillors, council officers, members of the armed forces community and local cadets, who played an important role in the event as Moray paused to remember those who have served at sea and those who continue to support the UK's economy and supply chains through their work.
Merchant Navy Day is observed each year on 3 September and commemorates the sacrifice and service of Merchant Navy personnel. The date marks the anniversary of the sinking of SS Athenia in 1939, the first British ship lost to enemy action during the Second World War
This year's ceremony highlighted the ongoing importance of remembering the thousands of merchant seafarers who served during times of conflict, including those who lost their lives while supporting the war effort during the Second World War.
Moray Council’s Civic Leader, Cllr John Cowe, said: “Merchant Navy Day provides an opportunity to recognise the courage, professionalism and dedication of seafarers who have played such a vital role throughout our nation's history. By raising the Red Ensign, we honour those who served before us while also acknowledging the important contribution made by today's merchant seafarers.
“I'm particularly pleased to see local cadets taking part in this year's ceremony. Their involvement helps ensure that the stories, sacrifices and achievements of past generations continue to be remembered and understood by young people.”
Moray Council's Armed Forces and Veterans' Champion, Cllr Peter Bloomfield, added: “The Merchant Navy has been central to Britain's security, prosperity and resilience for generations. Merchant Navy Day allows us to reflect on the bravery and commitment of those who served in often challenging and dangerous conditions.”
Cllr John Divers, a Royal Navy veteran, also commented: “Thousands of merchant seafarers made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country at sea, often facing significant risks far from home. It is important that we continue to honour their contribution and ensure their legacy is never forgotten.”
The Red Ensign, often referred to as the "Red Duster", has long been the symbol of the British Merchant Navy. Public bodies across the UK are encouraged to fly the flag each September as a visible demonstration of support for merchant seafarers and their families.
