Moray Council marks International Workers’ Memorial Day

Flags have been lowered at Moray Council’s headquarters in Elgin, to mark International Workers' Memorial Day.

The commemorative day takes place every year on 28 April, and is a time to remember people who have lost their lives because of a workplace accident, ill health or disease as a result of work.

Moray Council’s Civic Leader, Cllr John Cowe, said: “International Workers’ Memorial Day is an important opportunity to remember and reflect on those who have lost their lives as a result of work.

“Today, we stand with others across the world in remembering them and reaffirm the importance of protecting the wellbeing and dignity of every worker.”

Moray Council Leader, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, added: "Today is a time for quiet reflection and deep respect, allowing us to honour the lives of those who have passed away as a result of their work, and acknowledge the lasting impact the loss has on families, colleagues and communities.

“Each one of these individuals mattered, leaving a legacy that touched many lives. It is important to take time to recognise that, and to stand in solidarity with their loved ones.”

Moray Trades Union Council’s Vice Chair, Mark Baker, said: “Each year, International Workers’ Memorial Day allows us all to pay tribute to workers from all walks of life who are no longer with us, and to think of the families, friends and colleagues they leave behind.

“This year we are once again highlighting the particular threats posed by violence and aggression against workers.

“No worker should suffer abuse, intimidation or worse simply for doing their job, and Moray’s trade unions will continue to support our members so they can go to work without fear of violence or aggression.”
