Moray Council not to recognise Monday 15 June as additional bank holiday

Moray Council has agreed not to recognise Monday 15 June 2026 as an additional local public holiday.

The Scottish Government had designated the date as a national bank holiday, following the Scotland men’s team’s first FIFA World Cup fixture on Sunday 14 June.

After considering a report at its meeting on 25 February 2026, the Council agreed that existing leave arrangements will remain in place, with managers encouraged to consider leave requests where possible, taking account of service needs.

Recognising the date as an additional public holiday would have created additional financial pressures of approximately £97,000. Allocating an additional day of annual leave would have cost around £51,000.

Moray Council Leader Cllr Kathleen Robertson said: “Given the significant financial pressures facing the Council, it was agreed that introducing an additional public holiday or extra day of leave on 15 June 2026 would not be the right priority at this time.

“While Scotland’s participation in the World Cup is a moment of national interest, the Council must prioritise the delivery of core services and responsible management of public funds.”
