Moray Council reports reduction in carbon emissions during 2020/21
Moray Council recorded a 17% reduction in its annual carbon emissions in 2020/21, as reported to the Scottish Government.
Analysis of carbon emissions during 2020/21 revealed an overall reduction of 4,602 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), down 17% on the previous year.
Increased recycling and a reduction of waste to landfill was responsible for the majority of the emissions cut, saving approximately 3,618 tCO2e.
Further emissions were cut through reduced consumption of fuels, electricity and water as most employees worked remotely. Homeworking emissions were accounted for within the submission for the first time.
Ongoing energy saving projects within the council including the introduction of electric vehicles and LED street lighting also contributed to the lower carbon footprint.
Moray Council’s Climate Change Champion, Cllr Louise Nicol, said: “This report shows that significant progress has been made by the council to cut its emissions. Changing the way we work due to the pandemic has had an impact, and we can all learn from this. It’s a welcome step towards our target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030. We’ll continue to consider all necessary actions to cut our emissions further to tackle the climate emergency and achieve our net zero target.”
