Moray Council sets out region’s unique economic position to UK Government

Moray Council has outlined the region's economic strengths and future opportunities for growth following the Prime Minister’s recent speech in Scotland.

In a letter to the Secretary of State for Scotland, the council highlighted Moray's strong economic foundations in the whisky and food and drink sectors, defence, engineering, advanced manufacturing and tourism. It also pointed to growing opportunities in renewable energy and the transition to net zero.

The council's long-term ambition is to build on these strengths by attracting investment, creating skilled jobs and supporting local businesses, helping to deliver sustainable economic growth across the region.

The letter emphasises that Moray is well placed to contribute to UK Government priorities, including economic growth, defence and security, energy and advanced manufacturing.

The council also highlighted the success of the £100m Moray Growth Deal as an example of how partnership working and targeted investment can deliver benefits for communities. Looking ahead, the development of the Moray 2040 vision will help shape how both established industries and emerging sectors can drive future prosperity and resilience.

The Buckie Harbour Masterplan was identified as a key project with the potential to support economic growth, renewable energy opportunities and the wider energy transition.

Councillor Kathleen Robertson, Leader of Moray Council, said: “Moray has a strong and distinctive economic proposition. We want to work with government as a strategic delivery partner so that national investment and local opportunity combine to create lasting benefits for our communities.”

Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of the Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, added: “Moray has a proven track record of delivering results through partnership working and investment. We have invited the Secretary of State for Scotland to visit Moray to see first-hand the benefits these projects are already bringing and to discuss the significant opportunities that lie ahead for our region.”
