A view across the Speyside Way.

Moray Council sets walkers and cyclists the Speyside Challenge in September

The aim of the challenge is to log the most journeys, or the most distance covered, by foot or bike, on the popular Speyside Way route, along an upgraded section between Craigellachie and Cragganmore.

There are 12 prizes including Moray Loves Local gift cards, valued up to £45 to be won.

Chair of the Economic Development & Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Marc Macrae, said it will be a good opportunity for people to enjoy the upgraded path.

“Making Speyside more accessible from Craigellachie to Cragganmore for active travel is an achievement to be proud of and we’re sure locals will be enjoying this safe option for walking and wheeling.

“It’s fantastic to see growing numbers of people becoming so enthusiastic about active travel, and racking up so many active journeys on routes like the Speyside Way.

"The Speyside Challenge competition is a great way to generate a bit of healthy competition and motivate residents to get active.”

The upgraded path runs from Craigellachie, through Aberlour and Carron to Cragganmore, and the route is now part of the Speyside Low Carbon Hub.

The Speyside Low Carbon Hub project was awarded funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge Fund, and Transport Scotland.

The project received £810,000 for the first phase of the project, between Craigellachie and Carron, and £635,000 for the second phase between Carron and Cragganmore.

The Speyside Challenge is taking place throughout September and businesses and individuals across Speyside are being challenged to take part.
