Moray Council successful in funding bid aimed at tackling coastal erosion

Moray Council has welcomed an announcement from the Scottish Government that its bid for coastal change adaptation funding has been successful.

Three Moray projects designed to highlight good practice in tackling coastal erosion in Scotland have secured a share of £226,000 from the Scottish Government's Coastal Change Adaptation Programme.

The Moray projects are three of ten case studies to receive a share of £1.05m.

Also securing funding is the council’s Near-Real Time Coastal Resilience Modelling project, which will enable long-term trends, the impact of individual storms, and future sea level rise and storm conditions to be anticipated.

The council’s Monitoring Moray Coast project has also been successful. It will involve the public photographing of the Moray coastline at various points to capture timeline change.

Chair of Moray Council’s Economic, Development Marc Macrae said: “This news will be very welcome, particularly from the Kingston community. The fact that the Scottish Government has selected our projects shows we’re leading the way in looking after our coast line and our communities impacted most by coastal erosion.”

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Net Zero and Just Transition Mairi McAllan said: “The climate emergency is not a distant threat - it is with us today. We need to start adapting our coast to sea level rise and the risk from coastal erosion. So I’m very pleased that local authorities are seizing the opportunity to do this essential work, with their local communities being key partners.

“These case studies will be an important source of knowledge to share with others across Scotland and to help us all take forward projects in the future. “
