Moray Council to invest £925,000 in flood protection and resilience projects
Moray Council is set to invest an additional £925,000 of Scottish Government funding in flood protection and resilience projects across Moray, helping communities prepare for future flooding and coastal erosion risks.
The funding has been provided by the Scottish Government to support flood risk management work.
The investment will support a range of projects across Moray identified through the agreed Flood Risk Management Plans, including:
- Progressing the Seatown Flood Protection Scheme, including updated modelling, detailed design work and preparations for future construction
- Reviewing the viability of the Portessie Flood Protection Scheme
- Carrying out repairs to coastal defences in Lossiemouth
- Managing sediment associated with the River Findhorn flood scheme
- Updating the Rothes Surface Water Management Plan
- Collecting flood risk data in Kinloss
- Essential tree clearance work at the Elgin Flood Scheme
- Maintenance of reservoirs and flood risk management infrastructure.
The programme has been designed to balance investment in existing flood defences with the development of future flood protection schemes. It will also ensure that Moray is well placed to secure further external funding for larger projects in the future.
Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council's Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “Flooding and coastal erosion continue to be significant challenges for many communities across Moray. This additional funding from the Scottish Government gives us an important opportunity to invest in protecting homes, businesses and infrastructure while planning for the future.
“The programme strikes a balance between maintaining and improving the assets we already have and progressing projects that could attract further funding in the years ahead. By investing now, we're helping to build resilience, reduce future risks and support communities across Moray as we respond to the impacts of climate change.”
The proposed works support the priorities of Scotland's Flood Risk Management Plans and the National Flood Resilience Strategy, while helping Moray Council improve resilience to future flooding and coastal erosion impacts.
