Moray Council unveils new LED lighting on Duke of Gordon’s monument

Moray Council has unveiled new LED lighting on the Duke of Gordon’s Monument on Ladyhill in Elgin.

The innovative lighting system, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, allows the monument to be illuminated in various colours to mark different awareness days and special occasions.

The monument, a historic landmark in Elgin, now features state-of-the-art LED lights that are pre-programmed to change colours. This enhancement not only highlights the monument's architectural beauty but also serves as a beacon of community solidarity and awareness.

A display cycling through the full colour sequence happens for the first five minutes after sunset before settling on the pre-programme colour until sunrise.

The first lighting event will take place between 2-8 April 2025, when the monument will be illuminated in white and turquoise to mark Autism Acceptance Week. The community is invited to join the celebration and witness the monument in its new, vibrant light.

Moray Council Civic Leader, Cllr John Cowe, commented: "We’re thrilled to introduce this modern lighting system to one of Elgin's most iconic landmarks. The ability to change the lighting for different awareness days allows us to show our support for various causes and bring the community together in a visually impactful way."

The project was made possible through the support of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which aims to invest in local communities and enhance public spaces. The new lighting system is part of Moray Council's ongoing efforts to improve the region's infrastructure and promote cultural heritage.
