Moray Council’s second Active Travel Strategy approved

The new Active Travel Strategy aims to build on the increase in walking and cycling in Moray over the next five years.

The plan embeds the ethos that Active Travel has many benefits to both communities and individuals, and has a number of positive outcomes for public health, social inclusion, reducing the environmental impact of transport and for supporting local economic activity.

National priorities of walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport over single occupancy car use, will be embedded in Council decision making to address any challenges and achieve key priorities.

The Council’s Climate Change Strategy sets a target for Council operations to aim to be carbon neutral by 2030 and also includes actions that focus on Active Travel, which will be supported by this plan.

Chair of Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Marc Macrae, said: “As we encourage residents and visitors to Moray to increase their use of non-motorised travel we’ll support them to do so with an ambitious action plan.

“Further development of the active travel network, embedding active travel opportunities in new developments, and providing improved access to, and provision of, active travel infrastructure are all key to getting more people on their bike or walking.

“We would also support employers in Moray to encourage their staff to walk and cycle more where possible, while we’ll also assist schools to continue their great work in promoting walking, cycling and scooting to school.”
