Moray Council’s Youth Work Team expands support for young people
Moray Council’s Youth Work Team is offering more support than ever to young people, with a new report showing strong progress in schools and communities.
The update to the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee shows a 93% increase in the number of young people taking part in youth work activities, and a 119% increase in the number of sessions delivered compared to 2023/24.
A key factor in this success has been the introduction of four new Outreach Youth Worker posts in Buckie, Forres, Elgin and Keith. These roles have strengthened links with schools, helping staff step in earlier to support pupils who may be at risk of missing out on education and giving more young people access to the right help at the right time.
Youth workers are delivering programmes that support young people with employability, health and wellbeing, and the move from primary to secondary school. Many young people are also gaining national awards such as Hi5, JASS, Arts Awards and Saltire Awards.
One project at New Elgin Primary School has shown strong results, with three-quarters of pupils improving their attendance and most gaining awards. The school also reported fewer pupils arriving late and greater engagement in learning.
The new posts have enabled more community-based youth work and partnership projects, helping the team connect with more local organisations to support youth clubs and activities. Staff also work with Police Scotland and other council services to support young people in their communities.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, said: “These results clearly show the positive impact of youth work in Moray. By working closely with schools, communities and partners, our staff are reaching more young people and giving them the skills, confidence and opportunities they need to succeed. The growth in participation and achievement is a real credit to the team and the young people themselves.”
