Speyside high - voice for nature

Moray High School pupils become voices for nature

An episode of Planet Earth III, which pupils from Speyside High School provided a voiceover for, airs today (Monday 22 April) as part of Earth Day.

Pupils from the school were invited to take part in a voiceover recording project, where they voiced a section of the Wonders of Nature episode that originally aired on New Years Day.

Speyside High School was one of five schools in the UK chosen to take part, thanks to the initiative of one of their pupils.

Head student, Leah McGillivray, previously responded to a call from the BBC about fundraising for last year’s BBC Children in Need appeal.

While all other responses were completed by teachers, Leah was the only student to send a submission. This caught the interest of the Planet Earth III project team and they approached the school to take part.

The full episode can be found on BBC iPlayer.

Speyside High School Head Teacher, Patricia Goodbrand, said: “I’m so proud that the initiative of one of our head students could lead to an opportunity such as this. We’re focused on getting our young people engaged with nature in a more proactive way and experiences like this really encourage are students to participate. Thank you to the entire Planet Earth III team.”

Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Communities and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “It’s always great to hear about exciting opportunities within our schools but even more so when it’s a result of a pupil’s actions. I’m delighted for the school and that they were chosen to take part in such an interesting project, it’s very well deserved.”

Head student, Leah McGillivary, added: “I was shocked when I heard the BBC had approached the school to take part in this because of my Children in Need fundraising application. We’ve been working hard to organise lots of fundraising events within the school and never expected it would result in something like this. It was an amazing opportunity and I’m glad we could share it with the S1 pupils.”
