Adult Learners Awards 2

Moray parents’ learning group wins national family learning award

A project helping parents in Moray build confidence, develop new skills, and explore career opportunities has won the Family Learning Award at this year’s Scotland’s Learning Partnership Awards.

Progress for Parents, delivered by Moray Pathways in partnership with Moray Council Employability Team and Community Learning and Development (Adult & Family Learning), provides parents with structured learning, peer support and accredited training.

Since launching in February 2024, the project has helped parents overcome personal challenges, grow in confidence, and reduce social isolation. Many participants have moved into volunteering, explored paid work placements, planned careers in childcare or even started their own businesses.

Chloe, who attends, said it has been life changing: “I’m more confident. I would never speak out in public before. Being part of the group has really helped me. I feel I can speak to anyone now. I speak more to my neighbours and on the phone. I speak to people in the street. I’ve recently set up internet in the house - I would never have done that before.”

Cara, another participant, agreed: “My mental health has improved. I’m realising my potential - I’m more capable than I thought. I can now relate past experiences and skills I’ve got for a job.”

The Scotland’s Learning Partnership Awards recognise groups that demonstrate outstanding commitment to learning, creativity and making a positive impact in their communities.

Moray Council Leader Cllr Kathleen Robertson said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in the Progress for Parents project. Supporting parents to realise their potential is vital and this award recognises the real, lasting difference the team is making to families across Moray.”

Moray Council Chief Executive Karen Greaves added: “The Progress for Parents group shows what can be achieved when strong partnerships and person-centred support come together. Their achievements are inspiring and a testament to the dedication of both staff and participants.”
