Moray pupils receive exam results
HUNDREDS of Moray students had their exam results today (Tuesday 7th), with many star pupils achieving high marks.
Attainment at S5 is broadly in line with the previous two years, with 22 students achieving five ‘A’ grades in their Highers. Overall, 13% of all candidates in S5 gained five Highers, with 33% of S5 pupils achieving three Highers.
Higher results in Moray have shown the greatest increase in many of our schools, with more pupils achieving one or more in 2018 than previously. Elgin Academy has a very impressive 63% of S5 pupils gaining at least one Higher, and 20% achieving five Highers. Of the 22 gaining five As, 7 were from Elgin Academy and three from Speyside High School; one S5 pupil from Speyside attained 4As at Higher and also an Advanced Higher within this exam diet. S5 attainment for Speyside High School was particularly strong this session in comparison to previous years.Six pupils from Forres Academy achieved 5As in their Highers.
This year a revised National 5 qualifications was implemented, which saw a change in assessment structure and for some courses a change to subject content. Across S4, 53 students achieved six A grades at National 5 level. This is an increase from last year, although there is an increase in all the A and B passes at National 5 level across our schools.
In addition there were a number of young people in S4 who combined National 5 passes at A with Higher passes at A. Overall S4 attainment has decreased from last year’s high point, although current results present particularly strong attainment for a number of individual pupils and subject areas.
Individual school results have shown impressive improvements, none more so than Elgin High School where N5 results in S4 show major improvements with 35% of pupils achieving three or more National 5 results, as well as 75% of fourth year pupils gaining at least one National 5 award, the best S4 results in recent years.
Moray Council’s Head of Schools and Curriculum Development, Vivienne Cross, said: “Analysis of our results is ongoing with more detailed work taking place over the course of the next week or so. In line with Scottish Government priorities we will be looking closely at how schools are closing the attainment gap for all young people.
“We will also be working closely with our secondary headteachers in the autumn term to review the attainment for this year and consider this in line with school improvement priorities. Young people are to be congratulated on their achievements.”
