Moray schools make encouraging progress in reducing attainment gap

The Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee today (Tuesday 16 September 2025) reviewed Moray’s annual National Improvement Framework (NIF) plan.

The plan, which will be submitted to the Scottish Government, outlines the key priorities and progress made in improving poverty-related attainment across the region.

The report highlights improvements in reading, writing, and maths skills, as well as efforts to close the education gap between disadvantaged and other pupils. Seven out of nine key areas showed progress in reducing this gap, showing a strong commitment to giving every child the chance to succeed.

Moray schools continue to take part in national programmes aimed at improving writing and maths. New strategies for improving literacy and numeracy are being introduced to further improve teaching and learning.

Despite difficulties in hiring staff and high absenteeism, positive steps have been taken, including placing primary-trained teachers in secondary roles to support key subjects.

Moray Council’s Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “We’re encouraged by the progress being made across our schools so far. The reduction in the poverty-related attainment in most key areas shows that our focused work is making a real difference to the future of children and young people in Moray.

“We know there is still more to do, particularly in secondary attainment, but these results show the dedication and hard work of our staff, pupils and communities.”

Looking ahead, the service will focus on leadership, wellbeing, inclusion, curriculum development, and improving teaching and assessment.

A follow-up report on secondary school attainment will be presented later this year.

Moray Council remains committed to tackling poverty and inequality and ensuring all children and young people have access to high-quality learning experiences.
