Moray schools to celebrate Month of the Military Child 2026

Moray’s service children and the resilience they show will be recognised as Month of the Military Child (1–30 April) gets underway.

Moray Council’s Dandelion Project is to deliver a programme of activities including school visits, creative workshops and purple-themed celebrations.

A new Month of the Military Child guide for schools has also been launched on the Moray Council website, providing resources and activity ideas to help schools, families and communities mark the month.

Reading Force will visit several local schools to run workshops that encourage families to read and talk about books together. The charity helps forces families stay connected through shared reading, giving them time to talk, reflect and enjoy stories together.

Never Such Innocence - a charity that helps service children share their experiences through creative expression - will also visit a number of schools.

Late last year, the organisation helped the children of Kinloss Primary School record a heartfelt song about what it’s like when someone you’re close to moves away – a common experience for military children and their friends.

Meanwhile, several local landmarks will shine purple – the official colour of Month of the Military Child – on the week beginning 20 April. These include the Duke of Gordon monument, Covesea Lighthouse, Nelson’s Tower and the Tolbooth in Forres.

Many local schools will take part in the national Purple Up! Day on Friday 24 April, when pupils and staff will be encouraged to wear purple and hold assemblies celebrating Service children.

Vivienne Cross, Head of Education at Moray Council, said: “A significant number of children from across Moray are from Armed Forces families, and I am very pleased that we are able to mark this important month with a diverse range of activities.

“As supporters of the Armed Forces Covenant, we are committed not only to supporting the wellbeing of military children and their families, but to recognising the immense contributions they make across Moray.”
