Moray Young Musicians 2026 winners announced
Some of Moray’s most promising young musicians went head‑to‑head last night in a closely fought final at the fourth annual Moray Young Musicians competition at Elgin Academy.
The top prize was awarded to trumpeter Finlay McLuckie (Elgin Academy) after a performance that included two well-known trumpet pieces that showed off his talent and skill.
Finlay will now represent Moray at the prestigious Scottish Young Musician and Rotary Young Musician competitions later this year.
Runner-up awards went to pianists Kirsty Simmers (Keith Grammar School) and Tom Roche-Nishimori (Forres Academy).
Violinist Ruby Grant (Portessie Primary School) was named Primary School Musician of the year, with euphonium player Lois Rushton (Mosstowie Primary) and violinist Emily Morrison (Mortlach Primary) runners up.
Alexander Davidson, Principal Teacher of Music Instruction and Performance in Moray, said: “The level of talent on display was remarkable and it’s impressive to see young musicians rise to the challenge. Many of the finalists have benefited from Council-supported activities, whether through individual lessons or by performing in school and Moray Music Centre ensembles. These opportunities clearly make a real difference in helping them grow as performers.”
Vivienne Cross, Head of Education at Moray Council, added: “The competition provided an excellent platform to showcase the exceptional musical abilities of young people across Moray. Each finalist delivered performances of outstanding quality, reflecting the hard work and dedication they have put into their craft.”
