Navigation light near Buckie to be replaced

The navigation light used to guide ships near Buckie is to be replaced by helicopter, as it’s reached the end of its working life after decades of service.

Moray Council has agreed to replace the existing structure on The Mucks, which has been in place since the 1970s, with a state-of-the-art new light.

The structure is designed to last for another 50 years, with annual maintenance to ensure it continues to guide vessels safely.

Because of the island’s rocky location, the new light will have to be airlifted into place; with work scheduled to take place on Thursday 19 June, weather permitting.

The replacement light has been designed by Engineering firm Wallace Stone LLP and marine specialists Aberdeen Marine Ltd.

Cllr Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council’s Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee said: “This replacement is vital to ensuring the safety of vessels navigating our coastline. The previous light has served the maritime community for a considerable period of time and we’re pleased to invest in this modern, durable upgrade at a time we’re looking at the potential for growth in and around Buckie Harbour.”
