Nearly half of Moray pupils take part in Active Schools activities
More children and young people than ever are taking part in sport and physical activity through Moray's Active Schools and Community Sport programmes, according to a new annual report.
Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee also agreed on 1 September 2026 to continue working with sportscotland in delivering these programmes.
Highlights from 2025/26 include:
- 5,812 children and young people took part in Active Schools activities, up 132 on the previous year.
- 49% of Moray's school roll participated, a 2% increase on the previous year.
- 5,666 free sport and physical activity sessions were delivered across Moray schools.
- 1,782 participants with additional support needs took part, an increase of 115 from the previous year.
- 281 participants from ethnic minority communities were involved, more than double the previous year's figure.
- 512 volunteers, including 161 young leaders, helped deliver activities across Moray.
- More than 70 sports clubs are now accredited through Moray Council's Club Accreditation Scheme.
The report also highlights a number of successful initiatives aimed at making sport more accessible, including girls-only gym sessions, the Gamer2Mover project for less active young people, and the Bikes for All partnership, which provided more than 60 refurbished bikes and helmets to children and young people across Moray.
Chair of Moray Council's Education, Children's and Leisure Services Committee, Cllr Kathleen Robertson, said: “It's fantastic to see so many children and young people across Moray taking part in sport and physical activity.
“The figures in this report show the positive impact these programmes are having, not only in increasing participation but also in supporting inclusion, wellbeing and personal development.
“I'd like to thank the schools, volunteers, clubs and community partners whose commitment helps create these opportunities and encourages more people to lead active, healthy lives.”
