New after school activities programme proposed to support families across Moray
Moray Council has approved proposals for a new after school activities programme designed to support families, reduce child poverty and help parents access work and training.
A funding bid has been submitted to the Scottish Government to develop a 3pm to 6pm children’s activities programme. If successful, the initiative would be rolled out as a pilot in Moray.
The proposed programme aims to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing families - access to affordable and flexible childcare. The plan sets out a new, flexible system of after school activities and care, designed to work for both urban and rural communities.
If funding is approved, the pilot would begin in Elgin; Forres; Buckie and selected rural communities. This phased approach will allow the council to test and improve the model before expanding it further.
It is also expected to help tackle the gender pay gap, as childcare barriers often affect women’s ability to work.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee commented: “We know that a lack of flexible, affordable childcare is one of the biggest barriers facing families in Moray. This proposal is about finding a practical solution that works for our communities, helping parents into work while giving children access to safe, enriching activities.
“If we’re successful in securing this funding, the pilot will allow us to test and build a model that could make a real difference to families across Moray, particularly those who need support most.”
