Unit where the community hub for New Elgin and the surrounding area will be opening in 2024.

New community hub coming to Elgin soon…

A community hub for New Elgin and the surrounding area is having an open day on Sunday 23 June and needs help to welcome residents through its doors.

Following the development of the New Elgin East Community Plan in 2019 partners from the Moray Community Planning Partnership, including Moray Council, Police Scotland and the NHS, have been working with a local members of the community to respond to a number of actions.

The plan was informed by community consultation where opportunities were identified to create a community space for networking, keeping mentally and physically active and give the chance to take part in activities like adult and family learning. The aspiration for the new hub is for it to become community-led.

Local residents are invited to the open day at Unit 3, Southfield Drive in New Elgin (between SunSupp and The Floor Studio) on Sunday 23 June.

The event is from 1-4pm and will kick off the process of naming the hub and gathering details of people willing to volunteer in the community space, with an official opening taking place later in the year.

The hub is likely to see a wide range of activities tailored to the local needs of young people, adults, parents and families, a social space for community projects to develop and an information base for services in the area.

Gordon Ruddiman is Moray Council’s Community Support Officer for the area and said: “The hub will evolve to become whatever the local community want and need it to be. In the first instance though, we’re looking for local residents to get involved with suggesting a name for the facility. We’re also looking forward to meeting members of the community on Sunday to get to know them a bit more and see where they can lend their skills to support the hub. They can do all of this at the launch event on Sunday 23 June where there will be kids activities and refreshments from 1-4pm. An open event during an evening for young people will also follow.

“The project has been community inspired from the outset and we look forward to seeing the next phase of this exciting hub for the New Elgin and surrounding area community.”
