Overnight campervan parking pilot to launch in Burghead

Moray Council shared details of its pilot scheme to allow overnight stays for campervans and motorhomes at Station Road car park in Burghead.

The trial will cover peak visitor season between 1 April to 30 November 2026, and follows a public consultation which showed strong support for designated overnight parking.

The pilot is intended to provide a safe and well-managed overnight option for visitors, while supporting the local economy and respecting the needs of residents. Burghead was chosen due to strong local backing and the availability of nearby waste disposal facilities at Burghead Harbour.

Self-contained campervans and motorhomes can stay overnight between 6pm and 10am, for a maximum of one night, with a payment of £7 being made via Moray Council’s PayByPhone parking app.

Signage is being installed to outline terms of use – and also direct visitors to nearby shops and facilities.

Head of Operations & Environment at Moray Council Nicola Moss, said: “This pilot is about finding a balance between welcoming visitors and respecting local communities. Burghead provides a good location to test how a managed overnight stay scheme works in practice. The trial will allow us to gather real-world evidence and listen carefully to feedback before any decisions are taken about next steps. We hope everyone who visits Burghead and the wider area enjoys its beauty and treats it with the respect it deserves.”
