Portgordon Primary School inspection report released
Portgordon Primary School has been praised by Education Scotland Inspectors for the progress it has made since its original inspection in 2023.
In their most recent visit, inspectors found that the school has taken important steps to improve teaching and learning, raise achievement, and create a positive and supportive culture for pupils.
Inspectors highlighted improvements in reading, writing and maths, with most children now working at the expected national levels. A new system introduced by staff is helping to track each child’s progress more clearly, making sure pupils get the right support and challenge.
They also noted that attendance has improved and is now in line with local and national levels. Children are learning in calmer, more purposeful classrooms where they are motivated to achieve. The pace of lessons has improved, with teachers giving helpful feedback linked to learning goals. Pupils are becoming more confident in talking about what they are learning and what success looks like.
Teachers are working with colleagues in other schools to build a shared understanding of national standards, particularly in reading and writing. This is leading to more reliable decisions about children’s progress and stronger data to inform next steps.
Inspectors were very positive about the school’s culture. Since the acting headteacher’s appointment in 2024, she has strengthened relationships and refreshed the school’s vision and values. Pupils are proud of their achievements, which are celebrated weekly through ‘shout outs’ and ‘magic moments’.
Transitions between nursery, primary and secondary are now smoother, with better sharing of progress information to support children.
Inspectors noted that while the school is making progress, there is still work to do. They encouraged the school to increase the challenge for learners who are exceeding expected attainment levels. They also suggested further improvements to the tracking system to make it even more effective in supporting pupils' progress.
Moray Council’s Head of Education, Vivienne Cross, said: “This is a very encouraging report which reflects the hard work of staff, pupils and families at Portgordon Primary. It’s great to see inspectors recognise the progress being made in raising achievement and creating a positive learning environment. We’ll continue to support the school to build on these strong foundations.”
Acting Headteacher at Portgordon Primary, Carene Hay, commented: “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together as a school community. Our staff, pupils and families have worked incredibly hard to improve learning and to create a school culture that everyone can be proud of. We’ll continue to focus on making sure every child is supported and challenged to reach their full potential.”
Inspectors are confident that Portgordon Primary has made good progress and has the capacity to continue improving. They will make no further visits in connection with this inspection.
