Portknockie Primary School marks 150 years with week of celebrations
Portknockie Primary School is getting ready to celebrate a very special milestone as it marks its 150th anniversary this October.
A week of activities will take place from Monday 5 October, bringing together current pupils and staff, former pupils and members of the wider community to celebrate the school’s history and look to its future.
Events include:
- Tuesday 6 October – Open Afternoon: Past and present pupils, staff, families and members of the community are invited to visit the school between 2pm and 4pm, or 5pm and 6.30pm. Photographs, memorabilia and articles about the school will be on display, alongside interviews pupils have carried out with former pupils. The school has also been supported by the Cullen, Deskford and Portknockie Heritage Group and staff at Buckie Library, who have provided information and articles for the displays.
- Thursday 8 October – Victorian Day: Pupils will turn back the clock by dressing in Victorian-style clothes and taking part in traditional Victorian sports and playground games.
- Friday 9 October – 150th birthday party: Staff and pupils will bring the celebrations right up to the present day with an afternoon birthday party featuring party clothes, games and food.
Portknockie Primary School Head Teacher, Karen Murray, said: “Reaching our 150th anniversary is a wonderful milestone for Portknockie Primary School and we’re really looking forward to celebrating it together.
“The school has been at the heart of the community for generations, so it’s particularly special to have the chance to welcome former pupils and staff back through our doors. Our pupils have really enjoyed finding out more about the school’s past and hearing the memories of people who came here before them.
“We hope lots of people from Portknockie and further afield will join us during the week, share their memories and help us celebrate 150 years of our school.”
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, commented: “Congratulations to everyone at Portknockie Primary School on reaching this fantastic milestone.
“For 150 years, the school has played an important part in the life of Portknockie and in the lives of generations of children and families. These celebrations are a lovely opportunity to bring those generations together, celebrate the school’s history and create new memories for today’s pupils.”
