Public invited to take part in Elgin woodland wildlife recording event

A new summer event inviting people to explore and record wildlife will take place in one of Elgin’s most diverse woodland habitats.

The Elgin Oakwood BioBlitz will run from 12.30pm on Friday 10 July, inviting participants to help record as many species as possible within Elgin Oakwood over the course of an afternoon and evening.

Participants will be joined by experts, including naturalists and partner organisations, who will lead a series of guided walks and hands-on activities. These will include a trees walk exploring native and non-native species, an invertebrates session focused on minibeasts, a wildflowers walk, a mammals tracking session and an evening walk to listen for woodland birds at dusk.

The event is free to attend, open to all ages and no experience is needed. Participants should meet at the Eight Acres Hotel and Leisure Club where parking is available.

Spaces on guided walks are limited and must be booked in advance.

Chair of Moray Council's Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee Cllr Marc Macrae said: “The Elgin Oakwood BioBlitz is a great opportunity for people of all ages and experience levels to get closer to nature. By working alongside experts and contributing real wildlife records, participants can help build a snapshot of biodiversity in the area while enjoying a great day outdoors.”
